The Municipal Structure of Whitianga
The City Council of Whitianga, New Zealand is the governing body of the coastal town located on the Coromandel Peninsula. The Council is made up of seven elected members, who are responsible for setting the policy direction and overseeing the implementation of Council decisions. Why is "Whitianga" called "Whitianga"?
The city takes its name from the Maori word "Whitianga," which means "crossing of the tides." The name is derived from its location at the mouth of the Whitianga estuary, which is crossed by the tidal flow of the Tairua River. The area has been inhabited by the Maori people since the 13th century, and the name is believed to have been in use since then. The city was officially named Whitianga in 1835 by the British explorer James Cook.
