The Municipal Structure of Whangamata

Why is "Whangamata" called "Whangamata"?
The city is named after the Māori phrase 'Whanga-mata-a-Tāwhaki' which translates to 'the bay of Tāwhaki'. Tāwhaki is a Māori hero who is featured in many of the local legends and stories. Whangamata is a popular tourist destination in New Zealand and is known for its beautiful beaches and surfing.
