The Municipal Structure of Westport

Why is "Westport" called "Westport"?

Westport, New Zealand is named after the Westport Harbour, which was discovered by Captain John Bingle in 1828. The harbour was named by Captain Bingle after his hometown of Westport, Ireland. The name of the city was officially recognized in 1874, when it was declared a borough. Westport has since grown to become a major port of entry for New Zealand's South Island, and its name is a reminder of the city's Irish roots.
