The Municipal Structure of Waitangi

Why is "Waitangi" called "Waitangi"?
Waitangi, New Zealand is named after the Treaty of Waitangi, which was signed at the same site in 1840. This treaty, which is considered to be the founding document of New Zealand, was signed between the British Crown and the Māori Chiefs. The Treaty of Waitangi was signed at the Waitangi Estate, which was named after the nearby Waitangi River. The Waitangi River was named after the Māori word for 'weeping waters', which was a reference to the many waterfalls in the area. The Treaty of Waitangi is still highly regarded in New Zealand today and the town of Waitangi is seen as a symbol of the nation's commitment to peace and unity.
