The Municipal Structure of Timaru

Why is "Timaru" called "Timaru"?

The city of Timaru, located in New Zealand, is named after the Māori language word "Te Maru," which translates to "the refuge." This name was chosen by the first European settlers as they found the area to be a safe harbor and a place of refuge. The city was officially founded in 1853 and has since grown to be a major port city in New Zealand. The original Māori name of Te Maru has been preserved in the city's name, Timaru, and is still used to this day.
