Why is "Te Aroha" called "Te Aroha"?
Aoraki/Mount Cook, New Zealand is named after the highest mountain in the country, Aoraki/Mount Cook. The mountain is named after the legendary Māori navigator, Aoraki. According to Māori legend, Aoraki and his three brothers were the first to explore New Zealand in their canoe, the Te Waka o Aoraki. The mountain was named after him in recognition of his exploration of the country. The city of Aoraki/Mount Cook is located at the base of the mountain and was also named after the mountain, making it a fitting tribute to the legendary navigator.
