Why is "Taupo" called "Taupo"?
Taupo, New Zealand is named after the lake it is located on. The lake itself is named after the Māori chief, Taupo-nui-a-Tia, who is said to have been the first person to fish in the lake. The name of the lake and the city is a combination of the Māori words 'tau' and 'po', which mean 'big' and 'night' respectively. The name is a reminder of the chief's courage in fishing in the dark, and is a fitting tribute to the history of the area.
