Why is "Stratford" called "Stratford"?
Stratford, New Zealand is named after Stratford-upon-Avon in England, the birthplace of William Shakespeare. The town was initially named Stratford-on-Patea after the Patea River which runs through it, but was changed to Stratford in 1878 to reflect its English namesake. The town was established in 1878 and is the only town in the world to be named after the famous English playwright.
