Rolleston, New Zealand is named after the Rolleston family, who were important figures in the early development of the Canterbury region. The family was headed by William Rolleston, who was a politician, lawyer, and landowner, and his son, John Rolleston, who was a Member of Parliament. The family was integral in the formation of the Canterbury Provincial Council, and the town was named in their honour. The Rolleston family was also responsible for the naming of the nearby town of Lincoln, which was named after Abraham Lincoln.
