The Municipal Structure of Paraparaumu Beach

Why is "Paraparaumu Beach" called "Paraparaumu Beach"?
Paraparaumu Beach is named after the Māori word "paraparaumu" which means "scraps of wood". The name is derived from the Māori legend that a chief of the area, Te Rauparaha, gathered the scattered pieces of wood from the beach in order to build a waka (canoe). In Māori culture, the waka was seen as a symbol of strength and courage, and so the name Paraparaumu Beach was chosen to represent the strength and courage of the local people.
