Why is "Palmerston North" called "Palmerston North"?
Palmerston North, New Zealand is named after Viscount Palmerston, the British Prime Minister from 1855 to 1865. The city was founded in 1866 and was originally known as Palmerston, but the "North" was added to the name in 1871 to differentiate it from Palmerston in the South Island. The name honors Lord Palmerston's role in the settlement of the region and his support of the New Zealand Company, which was instrumental in the development of the city.
