Why is "Mosgiel" called "Mosgiel"?
Mosgiel, New Zealand was named after a small village in Scotland, which was a popular place for Scottish settlers to come to in the 1800s. The original village of Mosgiel was located near the River Leven in the county of Fife, Scotland. It was likely named after the Gaelic words "mos" and "gheal" which mean "plain" and "bright" respectively. The settlers who came to New Zealand in the 1800s brought the name with them, and it was eventually adopted as the name of the town in New Zealand.
