Why is "Clive" called "Clive"?

Clive, New Zealand is named after William Clive, a British Army Officer who served in India and was the son of Robert Clive, a British soldier and statesman. William Clive was notable for his involvement in the Battle of Plassey in 1757, which was a decisive victory for the British East India Company in India during the Seven Years' War. The town of Clive was established in the late 19th century and was initially known as "Cliveville" after William Clive. The name was eventually shortened to "Clive" in the early 20th century.
