Why is "Christchurch" called "Christchurch"?
Christchurch, New Zealand is named after the college town of Christchurch, England. The city was founded in 1850 by the Canterbury Association, which was led by Edward Gibbon Wakefield and named after the college town in Oxfordshire, England. The city's name was chosen to reflect the association's desire to create a city similar to the English university city. Christchurch is now the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand and is a popular tourist destination.
