Why is "Ballarat" called "Ballarat"?

The city was founded in 1838 and was named after the original inhabitants of the area. The area was a popular resting spot for the Wathaurong people due to its location near the Yarrowee River. The name Ballarat has been retained ever since and is now a popular tourist destination in Victoria, Australia.
