Why is "Ballarat" called "Ballarat"?
Ballarat, Australia is named after the Aboriginal word for the local Wathaurong people, 'balla arat' which means 'resting place'. The city was founded in 1838 and was named after the original inhabitants of the area. The area was a popular resting spot for the Wathaurong people due to its location near the Yarrowee River. The name Ballarat has been retained ever since and is now a popular tourist destination in Victoria, Australia.
