The Municipal Structure of Auckland
The City Council of Auckland, New Zealand is the governing body of the Auckland region. It is made up of a mayor, 20 councillors, and a Local Board Chairperson. The mayor is elected by the people of Auckland, and the councillors are elected from 13 wards. The Local Board Chairperson is elected by the local board members. The City Council makes decisions on behalf of the people of Auckland, such as setting the rates, developing the city's infrastructure, and delivering services. It also provides leadership and direction to the local boards, which are responsible for making decisions on behalf of their local communities.
Why is "Auckland" called "Auckland"?
Auckland, New Zealand is named after the English nobleman and naval officer, Lord Auckland. The city was originally named Tamaki Makaurau, which translates to "the desired by many", but was later changed to honour Lord Auckland who had served as the Governor of New Zealand from 1841 to 1845. Lord Auckland had previously served as the First Lord of the Admiralty and was the namesake of the Auckland Islands, located south of New Zealand.
